This morning, Canadian police dismantled a pro-Palestinian camp inside the University of Alberta in Edmonton, and arrested 3 people from sit-ins demanding a ceasefire from Israeli forces on Palestinian civilians.
Eviction of a similar student sit-in
It is noteworthy that two days ago, the Canadian police evacuated a similar student sit-in in the city of Calgary in Alberta, west.
The campuses of most Canadian universities are witnessing sit-ins and protests by students demanding the need to stop the Israeli aggression in the Gaza Strip.
The protesting students demanded that universities reveal their investments and sever all ties with Israel. Yesterday, the police evacuated hundreds of sit-ins inside the university, after an official request from the university president.
For his part, the President of the Canadian University of Alberta confirmed that the security of the university community is in danger and that all methods of dialogue have failed, noting that the “vast majority” of the demonstrators left the place safely after several warnings.
There were no casualties
The Canadian Police explained in an official statement that no injuries were reported after about 50 people resisted, and that three people from outside the institution were arrested.
4 students were injured
However, the protesting students, called the “Peoples University of Palestine” group inside the university, confirmed that 4 students were injured, one of whom required his condition to be hospitalized.
The student group also added that the police used gas bombs and pepper spray, in addition to the police using batons and bicycles to physically attack the demonstrators.
The group published a number of video clips on the Internet showing attacks by Canadian police forces on students in order to disperse sit-ins inside the university.
But the police commented on these statements by saying that they were using “special ammunition” to disperse student sit-ins, not tear gas.
Continuing protests
It is worth noting that this sit-in was not the only one this week, as Canadian police forces dismantled a similar protest camp in Calgary, the largest city in the province of Alberta.
The sit-ins on the university campus witnessed clashes last Thursday, between police forces and the protesting students, and the police used tear gas bombs and sound bombs to evacuate protesters on the University of Calgary campus.
At the time, the police announced the arrest of 5 students who were protesting and demanding an immediate ceasefire by Israeli forces against Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip, the demolition of thousands of homes, and the fall of thousands of victims, including children and women.
Sit-ins and setting up similar camps in a number of universities
It is worth noting that other Canadian universities witnessed sit-ins and the establishment of similar camps in a number of universities, such as McGill University in Montreal, whose administration decided to begin on Monday the necessary procedures for the police to dismantle this protest camp.
These student sit-ins inside universities have reached many American universities, where hundreds of people have been camping for two weeks in the heart of the famous McGill University and Columbia University.
