In Abu Dhabi, items made of single-use styrofoam will be prohibited beginning on June 1, according to an announcement made on X by the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi and the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development Commission.
The prohibition will apply to containers for food and beverages that are intended for immediate consumption, as well as cups, lids, plates, and other food containers.
Exempt items
Items exempt from this ban include:
- Reusable storage boxes
- Coolers
- Items intended for medical use
In the month of May in the year 2020, the Abu Dhabi Single-Use Plastic Policy was introduced. In accordance with the regulation, beginning on June 1, 2022, all merchants were prohibited from selling single-use plastic bags. This resulted in a decrease of 95% in the number of people using these bags.
Similar prohibitions on single-use plastic goods have been implemented in a number of other emirates within the United Arab Emirates. On January 1, 2024, the prohibition was implemented in Sharjah, and on April 22, 2024, the emirate made the announcement that the municipality had ceased the production of plastic bags that are intended for disposable usage.
In addition, Dubai has declared that it would begin a ban on single-use plastics on January 1, 2024, and that the ban will be enforced with a maximum fine of Dh2,000 for any infractions.
Following an announcement made by the federal government in January 2023 on the imposition of a ban on single-use plastic in the United Arab Emirates beginning in 2024, these bans were implemented.
