Before heading out for your summer holidays, it's crucial to activate the ‘Away Mode’ on your utilities app. This feature allows you to monitor your water and electricity usage remotely, helping you avoid unpleasant surprises when you return home.
DEWA's Reminder and Advice
Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) issued a reminder on June 14 for customers to take proactive steps before traveling. They advised switching off and unplugging electrical appliances when not at home to prevent energy drain in standby mode.
Another precautionary measure suggested by DEWA is to activate the ‘Away Mode’ feature available on their website and smart app.
Using the ‘Away Mode’ Feature
The ‘Away Mode’ service allows customers to monitor their electricity and water consumption while away by receiving daily or weekly usage updates via email from DEWA. This feature notifies customers of any irregularities in their utility usage during their absence.
This proactive approach aims to avoid situations like that experienced by a British expatriate last August, who was shocked upon receiving a Dh20,179 DEWA bill after returning from vacation.
DEWA also mentioned their capability to issue ‘high water usage alerts’ to help customers identify potential leaks in their water connections. The smart meter system sends immediate notifications if it detects unusual spikes in consumption.
In addition to activating ‘Away Mode,’ DEWA advises customers to optimize electricity usage by adjusting lighting control systems to automatically switch on and off based on need. This measure can significantly reduce energy consumption during vacant periods.
Taking these precautions not only ensures efficient use of utilities but also contributes to minimizing unexpected expenses associated with high utility bills. By leveraging technology and proactive monitoring, customers can enjoy peace of mind during their travels, knowing they have control over their home's energy consumption. This approach aligns with DEWA's commitment to promoting sustainable practices and empowering customers with tools to manage their utility usage effectively.
