The Department of Municipalities and Transport in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates announced the blocking of lighting in public places and building facades after “midnight” with the aim of preserving the image of Abu Dhabi’s night sky.
Promoting a more sustainable future
The Department of Municipalities and Transport explained that this new campaign to promote a more sustainable future for community members is called the “General Policy for Dark Skies in Abu Dhabi,” out of its keenness on a more sustainable future throughout the emirate.
This policy is the first of its kind, through organizing a large-scale awareness campaign under the slogan “The beauty of Abu Dhabi is in the splendor of its sky,” to inform residents and visitors of the importance of preserving the image of Abu Dhabi’s night sky.
Solutions to the negative effects of light and visual pollution
Through this policy, the Department of Municipalities and Transport seeks to find solutions to the negative effects of light and visual pollution, by introducing sustainable lighting mechanisms and technologies, in line with the global efforts of the International Dark Sky Association.
This policy also revolves around encouraging the use of sustainable and environmentally friendly lighting systems, in order to protect the natural environment and wildlife, and support scientific research in astronomical sciences, in addition to enhancing public health rates, in addition to supporting sustainable development efforts.
Blocking lights in public places
It is worth noting that this policy includes blocking lighting from public places, which includes building facades, activating security lighting through motion sensors, and implementing a lighting ban system starting at 12 midnight.
It includes public buildings, parks, stores, streets, industrial areas, open spaces, and agricultural areas, in addition to various other areas.
Giving those concerned a specific deadline to reconcile the situation
The Abu Dhabi Municipalities Administration explained that it will give those concerned a period of time to reconcile the situation, in line with the new policy, which is scheduled to be implemented during the coming period. The policy excludes special cases of temporary lighting at some events, especially festivals, celebrations, and other occasions.
The launch of the general dark sky policy in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi is considered an embodiment of the Department of Municipalities and Transport’s commitment to applying the highest standards to enhance the quality of life in the emirate.
