Adnoc Distribution, the UAE's largest fuel and convenience retailer, is making significant strides in enhancing electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure.
Expansion of EV Charging Infrastructure
The company currently boasts 90 fast and super-fast EV chargers across its fuel stations in all emirates, and it has ambitious plans to expand this number to between 150 and 200 by the end of the year, with a long-term goal of reaching 500 units by 2028. This initiative aims to make EV charging more accessible and convenient for UAE residents.
Bader Saeed Al Lamki, CEO of Adnoc Distribution, highlighted the strategic placement of these chargers on highways and in key residential areas, ensuring that customers can charge their EVs within 15 to 20 minutes. This rapid charging capability aligns with Adnoc’s broader goal of enhancing customer convenience and satisfaction.
'Plug and Charge' Initiative
Adnoc Distribution has recently launched the ‘Plug in and Charge’ initiative, inspired by its successful ‘Fill and Go’ model for petrol refueling. This new system simplifies the EV charging process through advanced AI technology, allowing customers to charge their vehicles quickly and efficiently.
According to Al Lamki, the 'Plug in and Charge' initiative is part of a series of innovative steps, including the deployment of robotic arms for automated fueling. The AI-powered solution, launched last year, utilizes computer vision, smart cameras, and machine learning to recognize vehicles and provide a personalized fueling experience. This technology has now been extended to EV chargers, enabling a seamless and automated charging process.
Customers can set up the 'Plug in and Charge' system through a one-time setting on the Adnoc app. Once configured, the system recognizes the vehicle and automatically initiates the charging process when the car is plugged in. This process is designed to be as simple as charging a smartphone, enhancing the overall user experience.
Adnoc Distribution is committed to improving the customer experience through technological advancements and quality services. The company has opened eight new fuel service stations in the first quarter of this year, expanding its network to 846 stations, with plans to add 15 to 20 more by the end of the year. Al Lamki emphasized the importance of "delivering quality over quantity," ensuring that new stations are strategically located to serve the community effectively.
In addition to expanding its EV charging network, Adnoc is also investing in non-fuel growth avenues. This includes upgrading its car wash fleet and adding high-capacity car wash tunnels to improve speed and efficiency. The company plans to refurbish at least 50% of its car wash fleet by the end of the year, ensuring that customers receive the highest quality service in the shortest possible time.
Al Lamki revealed that Adnoc Distribution aims to transform its service stations into community hubs and destinations of choice. This involves increasing the number of quick service restaurants (QSRs) at its stations, creating a space where customers can avail themselves of various services beyond fueling. The company’s Adnoc reward points program further incentivizes customers to return, making the stations more than just a place to refuel but a destination for a range of services and experiences.
Through these initiatives, Adnoc Distribution is not only enhancing its service offerings but also contributing to the UAE's broader goals of sustainability and technological innovation. By making EV charging more accessible and efficient, Adnoc is playing a key role in supporting the transition to cleaner energy and a more sustainable future.
