UAE Schengen visa delays: Steps to secure your Europe entry permit

asmaa - | Arab News

Europe's cooler climates, fairytale castles, and majestic snow-capped mountains make it an irresistible destination for travelers. Before indulging in Western delights, a crucial step is securing a Schengen visa. This guide aims to streamline your visa application process, ensuring your journey to Europe is hassle-free.

Understanding the Schengen area

The Schengen Area consists of 29 European countries with open borders, allowing free movement for EU citizens and non-EU nationals residing or visiting for tourism, studies, or business. Given the UAE's proximity to Europe and its popularity as a tourist destination, there's a high demand for Schengen visas. In 2023, visa applications from the UAE surged by 25% compared to 2022 and 18% compared to 2019, making it challenging to secure a visa or appointment slot.

Types of Schengen Visas

The Schengen Tourist Visa, also known as the Uniform Schengen Visa, is available.

This visa is ideal for sightseeing, visiting loved ones, or attending short-term events. It allows single, double, or multiple entries and permits a stay of up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

Schengen Multiple Entry Visa (MEV)

For frequent travelers to the Schengen Area, the MEV permits multiple entries and exits. Although it allows 90 days of stay per 180 days, it expires once you leave the Schengen Area a second time, regardless of unused travel days. The MEV is available for one, three, and five years, offering flexibility for multiple trips within these periods.

VFS Global, the service provider for visa applications, updates available appointments in real-time on their website. Travelers are encouraged to plan and book their appointments well in advance to avoid delays. Monaz Billimoria, Regional Head at VFS Global, advises applying up to six months before travel to ensure timely processing.

Key Steps in the Application Process:

  1. Choose the target country: Select the country where you plan to spend the most days; this will be your entry point.

  2. Prepare Your Documents: Required documents typically include a completed application form, passport, itinerary, proof of accommodation, financial stability (bank statements), and travel insurance. Check the embassy/consulate website for specific requirements.

  3. Monitor Appointment Slots: Regularly check the VFS website for available slots, particularly during late hours or between 9 and 10 a.m. daily. Securing an appointment can take 1-2 months or more, depending on the season.

  4. Look for Cancelled Appointments: Keep an eye out for cancellations, as these can open up new slots unexpectedly.

  5. Check Visa Requirements for Multiple Entries: If you hold a valid visa from another Schengen country, verify if it allows entry into your desired destination.

  6. Consider Alternative Locations: If appointments in Dubai are full, try the Abu Dhabi office. Alternatively, apply through a less frequented Schengen country, ensuring it will be your point of entry and you spend the majority of your time there.

Tips for a Successful Application

  1. Plan Well: Have a detailed itinerary for your European trip.
  2. Financial Proof: Demonstrate sufficient funds to cover your stay in the Schengen area.
  3. Employment Documents: Provide records that confirm your employment status and income.
  4. Be Proactive: Regularly check the VFS website for available slots and be prepared to act quickly.
  5. Consider Premium Services: For a smoother process, opt for services like 'Visa at Your Doorstep' or premium lounge services. These offer personal assistance, quicker application submission, and convenient document handling.

VFS Global offers a 'Visa at Your Doorstep' service where professionals visit your home or office to collect documents and enroll biometrics. This service is ideal for large groups, corporate teams, universities, schools, and senior citizens.

For a stress-free experience, premium lounge services provide personalized assistance, faster application processing, and immediate biometric enrollment. Additional benefits include free photocopying and photobooth services, with updates via voice calls and SMS.

By following these guidelines and leveraging available services, securing your Schengen visa can be a seamless experience, paving the way for your European adventures.
