Amidst escalating weather instability in the UAE, the National Emergency, Crisis, and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA) has issued a directive urging both private and government sector employers to facilitate remote work arrangements for their staff.
This recommendation, aimed at mitigating risks associated with the volatile weather conditions, excludes employees whose physical presence is indispensable for critical operations or recovery endeavors. However, the ultimate decision rests with the respective authorities.
In response to heightened alert levels due to the inclement weather, the UAE has bolstered its readiness to effectively manage potential emergencies. Following a recent storm on April 16, authorities are meticulously assessing the impact of adverse weather on various regions across the country. Authorities have enforced road closures in areas susceptible to flooding, valleys, and dams to ensure public safety. Additionally, residents have been advised to avoid mountainous, desert, and coastal areas during this period of heightened risk.
The forthcoming weather disturbances, while not anticipated to match the intensity of the April 16 storm, are expected to bring significant precipitation and potential hazards. This prior deluge, characterized by a year's worth of rainfall within a single day, resulted in widespread disruptions, including flight cancellations, school closures transitioning to online learning, and transportation challenges. Consequently, the NCEMA emphasizes the importance of adhering to safety guidelines issued by relevant authorities.
Furthermore, the NCEMA recommends implementing distance learning measures in schools across the country as a precautionary measure. However, local disaster management teams delegate the decision to enact such measures. Notably, Dubai and Sharjah have already announced plans for remote learning on May 2–3 in response to the anticipated weather conditions.
As the UAE braces for continued rainfall, particularly peaking on May 2 and 3, the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) forecasts a range of weather phenomena, including rainfall, hail, lightning, and thunder. This forecast underscores the need for proactive measures and public vigilance to ensure safety and minimize potential disruptions caused by adverse weather conditions.
