Authorities in Jeddah recently intervened to prevent the smuggling of spoiled meat from sacrificial animals during Eid Al-Adha celebrations, as reported.
Unfit Animals and Illegal Transportation
According to reports, officials from the Jeddah Governorate Mayoralty encountered a significant issue at five border checkpoints within the governorate. They discovered over 1,000 animals that were deemed unfit for human consumption. These animals had deteriorated due to inadequate refrigeration during their transportation.
Seizure and Disposal
In response to this alarming find, authorities took immediate action. They seized a total of 1,243 sacrificial animals that had spoiled due to improper handling and lack of proper refrigeration facilities during transport. Alongside the animals, authorities also apprehended 109 vehicles that were illegally transporting the unfit meat. These vehicles were found to be operating without the necessary storage facilities to maintain the quality and safety of the meat during transit.
As a precautionary measure to protect public health, the 1,225 confiscated animals were promptly destroyed. They closed down 409 illegal livestock enclosures and shuttered 527 unauthorized slaughterhouses operating within the governorate. They carried out enforcement actions against 1,594 vehicles that were involved in the illegal sale of sheep at unauthorized locations.
